FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The U.S. Department of State has the sole responsibility for examining applications and issuing passports.

How long does it take to receive my passport?
Routine application processing takes 4 to 6 weeks. Cuyahoga County Public Library can provide expedited service for an additional $60 fee, which reduces the processing time to 2 to 4 weeks.

Where can I get a copy of my birth certificate?
If you were born in Ohio, you can visit the Department of Health's Vital Records page to get a copy. If you were born in another state, visit the Centers for Disease Control website for a state-by-state listing of contact information for obtaining vital records.

Can I get a passport for my child?
Yes, but all children under age 16 require both parents or legal guardians to be present during the application process. Birth certificates must be submitted for all children showing parental relationship, even if the child has had a passport previously. Children ages 16 to 17 can get passports, but they must apply in person at an official passport acceptance facility.

Where can I get information about the status of my application?
Call 1.877.487.2778 or visit travel.state.gov.

Can I apply for a U.S. Visa at the Library?
Sorry, no. We cannot handle Visas. A Visa is an endorsement or stamp placed by officials of foreign countries on a U.S. passport that allows the bearer to visit that foreign country. Foreign entry requirements vary by country. Visit travel.state.gov for details.
