Cuyahoga County Public Library offers free computer classes and training for adults ages 18 and up. If you are a computer beginner we recommend starting with one of our Computer Essentials courses. If you’re looking to develop a specific skill … we have a class for that too. Day, evening and Saturday classes are available. 

GUIDELINES 

•All classes start promptly! We cannot hold seats for students who arrive late.
•Classes are available to adults ages 18 and up.  
•Registration is required for all classes. Registration opens 30 days before the start of the class.
•Some classes require prerequisites. 
•Many of our classes offer Northstar Digital Literacy Certification.

COMPUTER ESSENTIALS CLASSES

COMPUTER BASICS 

Learn the basics about computing devices, including identifying hardware, using a mouse and keyboard and navigating the desktop environment. We will also cover computer settings, file management and mobile devices. Prerequisite: none. Northstar Digital Literacy Certification is available for this class.

EMAIL BASICS

‚ÄčLearn how to create, send and organize email, as well as attach files to messages. We will also discuss spam, junk mail and email etiquette. Prerequisite: Internet Basics. Preferred: an existing email account. Northstar Digital Literacy Certification is available for this class.

INTERNET BASICS 

Learn how to use web browsers and search engines to navigate the internet. We will also discuss how to stay secure while searching for and submitting information online. Prerequisite: Computer Basics or experience using a mouse. Northstar Digital Literacy Certification is available for this class.

WINDOWS 10 

Learn how to use the newest operating system for PCs, tablets and phones in this interactive hands-on class. Explore new features, including the redesigned start menu, Microsoft Edge and OneDrive. Prerequisite: Computer Basics or experience using a mouse. Northstar Digital Literacy Certification is available for this class.

ADOBE CREATIVE CLOUD  

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR 1

Design a logo using various shape, drawing and text tools.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 1

Learn how to edit and manipulate images using basic tools. Topics include cropping and rotating images, using color correction tools and working with layers.

PHOTOSHOP 1 & 2: BASICS & RETOUCHING

Learn how to edit and manipulate images using basic tools. Topics include cropping and rotating images, using color correction tools and working with layers. Then expand your knowledge of Photoshop as you explore tools for retouching and correcting photos. Topics include using selection tools, patch tools, adjustment layers and layer masks.

GOOGLE APPS

GOOGLE APPS 1

Explore Google’s popular web-based office applications: Docs, Sheets and Slides. We will also discuss using Google Drive to store and organize fi les in the cloud. Prerequisites: Gmail account and Microsoft Word 1.

MICROSOFT ACCESS   

ACCESS 1

Learn how to use Microsoft’s database application. Discover how to manage large amounts of information and link data to create a seamless array of information. Features covered include tables and queries. Prerequisite: Excel 1.

MICROSOFT EXCEL   

EXCEL 1

Get an introduction to spreadsheets. Topics covered include entering data, using autofi ll and performing calculations with formulas and
functions. Prerequisite: Word 1 or experience using Excel. Northstar Digital Literacy Certification is available for this class.

EXCEL 2 

Learn how to manage, manipulate and analyze data using the sort, filter and chart tools available in Excel. Other topics include paste special options and working with multiple sheets. Prerequisite: Excel 1.

EXCEL 3

For those already familiar with Excel, this class will introduce a variety of functions, including text functions, summary functions and conditional summary functions. Learn how to use named ranges in functions and resolve common function errors. Prerequisite: Excel 1.

EXCEL 4

Learn how to use lookup functions, absolute and relative references, charts and pivot tables to analyze spreadsheet data. Prerequisite: Excel 3.

EXCEL REVIEW

Review information covered in upper-level Excel classes through hands-on exercises. Topics include lookup functions, pivot tables, functions and absolute and relative references. Prerequisite: Excel 4.

MICROSOFT OFFICE SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION: EXCEL 2016

This five-week series of interactive classes will prepare you for the MOS Excel 2016 Specialist Exam.

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 

OUTLOOK 1

Learn how to use this Microsoft program for personal or professional purposes. We will cover sending, receiving and organizing emails; maintaining a calendar; and adding contacts. Prerequisite: Word 1.

MICROSOFT POWERPOINT

POWERPOINT 1 

This class offers an overview on designing creative presentations and slideshows. Create a simple presentation and learn how to add text, images and transitions to slides. Prerequisite: Word 1 or some experience using PowerPoint. Northstar Digital Literacy Certification is available for this class.

POWERPOINT 2

Build on what you know to take your presentation to the next level. Topics include using slide master and adding animations, hyperlinks, videos and sound. Prerequisite: PowerPoint 1.

MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 

PUBLISHER 1

Learn how to make attractive fliers using Microsoft’s desktop publishing program. Prerequisite: Word 1.

MICROSOFT WORD

WORD 1 

Learn how to enter and format text and images, change line spacing, and copy and paste. We will also offer saving and printing tips. Prerequisite: Experience using a mouse or Computer BasicsNorthstar Digital Literacy Certification is available for this class.

WORD 2

Explore tools for organizing and adding visual interest to documents. Topics including creating and modifying tables, inserting and formatting images, and creating letters and mailing labels using the mail merge feature. Prerequisite: Word 1.

WORD 3

Learn about the advanced formatting features available in Word, including tab stops, styles, headers and footers. We will also discuss using tracking capabilities and comments to collaborate on documents. Prerequisite: Word 2. 

WORD REVIEW

Review information covered in upper-level Word classes through hands-on exercises. Topics include adding tables and images, incorporating advanced formatting features and tracking changes. Prerequisite: Word 3.
