Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Cuyahoga County Public Library. We're always looking for individuals willing to give their time and talent to help us make our community an even better place to live, work, and play.

1-2-3 READ

Help students in Grades 1-3 develop critical reading skills. We need volunteers at the following branches/times...

Garfield Heights Branch

If your volunteer application is accepted, Cuyahoga County Public Library will provide you with the necessary training to become a 1-2-3 READ tutor.

Volunteer Requirements:
  • You must complete our online Volunteer Application.
  • You must be at least 14-years-old.
  • You must complete a mandatory background check.  

Homework Centers

Our award-winning afterschool Homework Centers program has impacted the lives of thousands of at-risk students in grades K-8. Through the program we seek not only to help improve students' grades and subject comprehension, but to improve their attitudes toward school and increase their self esteem as well. Students who participate in the program receive homework assistance from trained volunteer tutors in the following school subjects:  

  • Language Arts
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Science
  • Social Studies
Students also take part in educational games and activities designed to foster a lifelong love for learning. We currently offer the Homework Centers program at ten Cuyahoga County Public Library branches.

We're looking for individuals who are interested in helping students better understand their homework assignments and improve their subject comprehension.

If your volunteer application is accepted, Cuyahoga County Public Library will provide you with the necessary training to become a Homework Centers program tutor.

  • You must complete a mandatory background check.   

New Baby Literacy Liaison

We're looking for a dedicated individual who is passionate about early childhood literacy to meet with new parents at MetroHealth Medical Center once a week. As a volunteer New Baby Literacy Liaison you will be asked to visit the parents of newborns born at MetroHealth to share information about our New Baby Literacy program and distribute free copies of Cuyahoga County Public Library's New Baby Literacy Kits. Each kit contains a variety of helpful resources, tips and activities for new parents to help their child develop the skills they need to become proficient readers.
If your volunteer application is accepted, Cuyahoga County Public Library will provide you with training to help you coach new parents on the importance of reading to their child, beginning at birth. You will also recieve volunteer visitor training provided by the nursing staff at MetroHealth Medical Center. Volunteer for this opportunity by completing the MetroHealth Medical Center online application.

Volunteer Requirements: You must complete MetroHealth Volunteer Application Form to be considered for this volunteer opportunity. You must be at least 18-years-old. You must complete a mandatory reference and background check. You must be willing to make at least a 6-month commitment. 
 

Project Learn

If you can read this, you are needed. Cuyahoga County Public Library is recruiting volunteers to assist Project Learn in meeting its mission of "Literacy for Every Adult." Project Learn’s purpose is to provide basic skills and GED preparation to adults so that they may attain self-sufficiency and independence.
 
Volunteer requirements:
  • You must be at least 18 years of age and out of high school.
  • You must be dependable, prompt and interested in others and have a willingness to relate to others.
  • You must be compassionate, respectful of confidentiality, flexible, friendly and patient.
  • You must attend a 7-hour Tutor Training Program, which is conducted on one Saturday.
  • You will meet with students twice a week for 1.5 hours each session.
  • You must complete our online Volunteer Application.     

STEAM

Help students ages 11 to 18 explore 21st century skills. Open yourself to a new experience working in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). Cuyahoga County Public Library is excited to recruit volunteers with a desire to engage with students and help generate their curiosity at STEAM programs (representative sample dates, times, and locations will vary).

  • You must complete a mandatory background check.     

Friends of the Library

Another way to get involved in your community is to join a local Friends of the Library group. Cuyahoga County Public Library has 25 Friends of the Library groups who volunteer their time and energy to help raise funds to support Library programs, exhibitions, special events and more. Please call your local branch if you are interested in learning more about becoming a Friend.
