1-2-3 READ

Students who cannot read at grade level by the end of third grade are far more likely to perform poorly in school and eventually drop out. We must do all we can to keep struggling readers from falling behind. Through our 1-2-3 READ program, we partner with local school districts to identify at-risk students in grades K – 2 and help them get back on track. Students enrolled in the program visit their local library branch two to four times per week after school. There, they practice their reading skills with volunteers and take part in literacy-based games and activities.

Volunteer Requirements:
  • Complete our online Volunteer Application
  • Complete a background check.
  • Attend a volunteer training session.

Homework Centers

Our award-winning after-school Homework Centers program has impacted the lives of thousands of at-risk students in grades K – 8. Through the program we seek not only to help improve students' grades and subject comprehension, but to improve their attitudes toward school and increase their self esteem. Students who participate in the program receive homework assistance from volunteers in the following school subjects:

  • Language Arts
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Science
  • Social Studies
Students also take part in educational games and activities designed to foster a lifelong love for learning. We currently offer the Homework Centers program at 10 Cuyahoga County Public Library branches.
