Speaker series welcomes author, artist and LGBTQ icon Alison Bechdel
Creator of the comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For and Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic to visit Cleveland on April 20th

Skirball Writers Center Stage Series, presented by the Cuyahoga County Public Library Foundation and its academic partner Case Western Reserve University, will welcome Alison Bechdel to the stage on Thursday, April 20th at 7:30 p.m. in Case Western Reserve University’s Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at The Temple – Tifereth Israel. The work of acclaimed author and illustrator Alison Bechdel explores themes of gender bias, homosexuality, and family relationships. She is best known as the creator of the long-running comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, and the 2006 graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, which was named Best Book of 2006 by Time magazine and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Fun Home: The Musical, a musical adaptation of the acclaimed graphic memoir, opened on Broadway in April of 2015 to positive reviews and went on to win five Tony Awards, including “Best Musical.” Fun Home: The Musical was presented as a part of the Key Broadway Series at Playhouse Square last October.

book cover and linkBechdel's comics have appeared in The New YorkerSlateMcSweeney’s, The New York Times Book Review, and Granta. She won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2012, and in 2014 was named a MacArthur Fellow. Her most recent book is the graphic memoir Are You My Mother?

The William N. Skirball Writers Center Stage Series is the signature event for the Cuyahoga County Public Library Foundation and helps support Cuyahoga County Public Library, the top-rated large library system in Library Journal’s annual Index of Public Library Services for eight consecutive years (2009 – 2016).
