In May, Nijkamp told Publishers Weekly she gravitates "toward the intense subjects" because she loves "trying to find hope in the darkness." Her best-selling young adult novel, This Is Where It Ends, follows four teens over the course of the 54 minutes of a school shooting. The book ranked on many "Best Of" lists in 2016 including Buzzfeed, Goodreads and Bustle, which called it “important in its timeliness.” Nijkamp says she was inspired to write This Is Where It Ends after having a conversation with a friend following a high-profile school shooting. Her research for the book including reading first-hand accounts of shootings, interviewing real-life victims, and pouring through investigative reports.

Nijkamp's new book, Before I Let Go, deals with teenage depression, suicide, and feelings of guilt. She says she hopes the book can help start conversations among teens who are suffering from depression or mental illness so that they can feel less alone.

Nijkamp is the founder of DiversifYA and has served as an executive member of We Need Diverse Books. She was born and raised in the Netherlands.

This event is part of CCPL's Beyond the Book Jacket Author Series. The series gives readers opportunities to meet award-winning and best-selling authors and hear the stories behind their stories. For a complete schedule, visit beyondbookjackets.com.
